Understanding Microplastics

A closer look at the materials we live with, and the choices we make every day.

What are microplastics?

Microplastics are small plastic particles, generally less than 5 millimetres in size. Some are made small; others form as larger plastic items break down. Sources include synthetic textile fibres and tyre wear. Read UNEP’s introduction to plastic pollution.

Where everyday materials fit in

Plastic is used in packaging, clothing and many household objects. Synthetic fabrics such as polyester, nylon and acrylic can shed plastic microfibres. A natural-fibre outer fabric, however, does not tell you everything about a finished product: linings, coatings, threads, trims and other components matter too.

What do we know about health?

Research examines exposure through food, water and air. In its 2022 review, the World Health Organization identified uncertainties and further research needs. Finding particles and establishing their effects are different questions; a shopping guide cannot resolve them. Our selection is not a medical recommendation or a promise to prevent exposure or illness. Explore the WHO review.

Start with a few considered choices

  • Use what you already own. Look after useful items rather than replacing everything at once.
  • Reduce unnecessary disposables. Choose reusable options where they suit your routine.
  • Read beyond the headline material. Look for information about the parts that touch food, your skin or everyday surfaces, as well as any coatings and linings.
  • Match the object to its purpose. Follow its care and usage instructions, and ask us when a material detail is unclear.

What Microplastic-Conscious means at Fdivinek

A more considered approach to materials—not a claim that every item is completely plastic-free. Product-level descriptions are the place to check composition and construction. A collection name alone is not proof of testing, filtration performance or a health benefit.
