About Handwoven Ramie

A visible weave. An individual texture. A material worth getting to know.

What is ramie?

Ramie is a plant-based textile fibre from the nettle family. Often compared with linen in appearance, it has a long history of textile use. Historical names include grass cloth and grass linen. Explore its textile history with the Science History Institute.

What does handwoven mean?

Handwoven describes how the cloth is woven on a hand-operated loom. It is more specific than “handmade”, which can refer to other stages of making an object. It does not mean that every component of a finished bag or household item is handwoven ramie.

Texture, character and variation

In handwoven cloth, variations in yarn and weave can give the surface its character. The feel, weight, openness and colour of a piece depend on its particular fabric and finish. Check individual product photographs and descriptions rather than assuming every handwoven ramie textile will feel or perform the same.

Beyond the main fabric

A bag may also contain handles, a lining, closures, stitching or other trims. The handwoven ramie name identifies the featured textile; it is not a promise that a finished piece is entirely ramie or entirely plastic-free. Consult each product’s material information, or contact us about a detail that matters to you.

Caring for your piece

Follow the instructions for the individual product. Do not assume that a finished bag can be washed like untrimmed fabric, or that every dye and finish tolerates the same cleaning method. If you are unsure, contact info@fdivinek.com before washing or treating it.
